Melt value is the value of the metal only. Dealers usually buy a little under melt and sell above it, and rare dates or high-grade coins can be worth much more to collectors.
| Kennedy halves | 1965–1970 (1970-D in mint sets only) |
| Ike dollars | Certain S-mint collector coins 1971–1976 |
| Bicentennial | 1976-S quarter, half and dollar in 3-piece silver collector sets |
40% silver coins are “silver-clad”: outer layers of 80% silver bonded to a lower-silver core, for 40% silver overall. The 1965–1969 Kennedy halves are the ones you’re most likely to find in circulation (the 1970-D was issued only in mint sets). The others were sold to collectors.
1965–1970 Kennedy half dollars, certain S-mint Eisenhower dollars (1971–1976), and the 1976-S Bicentennial silver quarter, half and dollar sold in collector sets.
